Abi Huynh
Abi (pronounced ‘A-bee’) Huynh is a partner at Vancouver-based agency, Working Format. His portfolio is littered with type design, experiments and essays – the mark of someone who has a true love for the way words and letters are constructed. You may already be in possession of some of Abi’s design, as he regularly collaborates with Commercial Type producing their specimen sheets. We’d love to get our hands on the Arietta research/specimen book (see above), let alone the typeface.
Open Brief
Placements. You want one? Well, we can offer you one, but it’ll cost you… 1 creative project to be exact. Best case scenario, you’ll get a month-long placement and some recognition for your efforts. Worst case scenario, you’ll have a lovely new project to add to your portfolio.
Gabor Palotai Design
Gabor Palotai Design is a small graphic design studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. They have an affinity for type and shape, often using characters to create simplistic yet elaborate patterns. We love their identity for Indian restaurant, Annakhan.
11 out of 10
As 2011 emerged from the ashes of 2010, we found ourselves evaluating the past year’s highs and lows. Millions of us make New Year’s resolutions in order to make the impending year a success and our poster hopes to offer some inspiration to make 2011 an 11 out of 10 year.
Dala Floda
Time to start saving – $350 is what you’ll need to set aside for this elegant display font. For that investment you’ll get 8 different weights of a font designed by the great Paul Barnes. In fact, it took him 14.5 years to complete, so that’s only $24 per year – a bargain in our eyes.
Philippe Apeloig
If you’re not aware of the French designer/typographer, Philippe Apeloig, you should be – and if you carry on reading this post, you will be.
illo type
As a big fan/user of illustrators, I thought it quite fitting to write a post on illustrated typography. So, after scrolling through the vast amount of illustrators I’ve bookmarked over the years here’s a small selection of some of my favourites.
Tom Kan
We recently posted the Enter The Void ‘typographic storm’ after being struck by its unforgiving brutality, not to mention the obvious care and craft that had gone in to making it. After much discussion and analysis, we decided to go straight to the guy who designed it (Tom Kan) and ask him a couple of questions…
Zenza Bronica
Whilst taking some photos on my old 1982 Bronica SQ-a last week, Tom spotted the unusual stitched typeface on the strap. I’ve always been so absorbed in taking the photos and the outcome rather than looking at the nearly insignificant strap that accompanies this brilliant camera. Read the rest of this entry
Enter The Void
WARNING – CONTAINS FLASHING IMAGERY.
If you haven’t watched this title sequence… watch it now. It is taken from Gasper Noé’s latest creation, Enter The Void. I haven’t seen the film yet but from what I have read, this torturous attack on the senses eases you in to the film nice and gently. Read the rest of this entry
