Raw Type

A small project of ours that started last year, Raw Type (as it has become known) started life as a sort of adventure with projectors, type and the dark.

Originally, the plan was to produce some visuals for self-promotional material and the initial idea was literally based on projecting ourselves out into the world. We found an ideal setting for our experiment, upstairs from our studio in Islington Mill, Salford.

Some of the results were amazing, and just experimenting with all the different elements was a great experience. The focus of the project then began to shift (as self initiated briefs often do) towards something different. We had wanted to produce a font for some time and the results we had produced with the bright white letterforms presented the ideal opportunity.

The resulting font—Ray Five—is available to download here (it’s free).

Then, at this point, our intention was to create a website to feature the entire project and typeface but, as time went on, the idea developed further into creating a blog (Raw Type) and producing a special poster for the launch.

The concept behind the poster was to sort of link back to the initial fun of experimenting with light in the dark. When we looked into the different options available, we decided that there was only one option – glow-in-the-dark ink.
